EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
