Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
