Whenever a significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
