A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
